The Hi-Lite Overland Rear Bumper from Backwoods Adventure Mods swaps the soft factory rear end on 2016–2023 Toyota Tacoma trucks for a high-clearance steel bumper. Its corners tuck up and in to win back the departure angle a long bed usually costs you, so ledges and washouts stop catching the back of the truck.

It is all steel around the perimeter at 140 lb, with a pair of 3/4 in thick recovery points and an integrated high-clearance 2 in hitch receiver. Two steel side braces tie the wings back to the frame. License plate lights, a trailer wiring extension with a recessed plug, edge trim, Grade 8 hardware and black powder coat all come in the box.

Installation calls for a bedside cut, which the included trim finishes cleanly. The backup camera reroutes without splicing, but factory rear parking sensors are not retained. Pathfinder scene lights are an optional add-on. Backwoods Adventure Mods covers the structure with a lifetime warranty, and we ship it free within the contiguous U.S.

Questions we get

Will I keep my rear parking sensors?On the 2022+ Tundra, yes. On the 2016–2023 Tacoma Hi-Lite, no: the factory rear sensors don't carry over. The backup camera reroutes on both without splicing.

Do I have to cut the truck?The 2016–2023 Tacoma Hi-Lite needs a bedside cut, and edge trim is included to finish it. The Tundra bumper is a direct bolt-on with no cutting.

Can I still tow?Yes. The Tacoma Hi-Lite has its own high-clearance 2 in receiver with a trailer harness extension, and the Tundra bumper keeps the factory hitch so the tow rating is unchanged.

Can I add lights?The Tacoma Hi-Lite takes Pathfinder scene lights and the Tundra bumper takes Baja Designs S2 flush mounts. The Tundra version includes a blank-off plate if you skip them.

Does the Tundra bumper work with the Toyota rear step?No, it isn't compatible with Toyota's optional rear step.

When is the 4th gen Tacoma bumper available?Backwoods is still developing it and hasn't set a release date. Contact us and we'll let you know when it can be ordered.
